A conversation with a sports bag.
Wanda
(offstage) Aw c’mon, Mom, I need it. I really, really need it! Toby’s got one, Sally’s got one....
I neeeeeed (cut off by Mom’s voice)
Mom
No, you don’t need one and that’s final!
Wanda
(Humphing onstage) That’s just stupid! I do too need one!
SB
Need what?
Wanda
A sports bag. (pauses, looks around) Who said that?
(silence - continues talking poutingly to herself)
I need a great big equipment bag like that one that Toby just got.
SB
Why?
(Wanda swings around looking for source of the voice.)
Wanda
O.K., this is a little weird - I’m sure I heard a voice over here.
Must be my imagination. (turns away)
SB
(yawns loudly)
Wanda
O.K., (turns back to face hockey bag) now I know there’s somebody here! Come out so I can see you.
SB
You can see me. You’re looking right at me!
Wanda
(jumps back) Erk! .... a talking sports bag? That’s so silly!
SB
Excuse me? I’m not silly. Now you’ve hurt my feelings!
Wanda
Sorry ..... it’s just that I’ve never met a talking equipment bag before.
SB
That’s because most people don’t get too close ....... something about us being smelly
... but that’s not our fault now is it?
So, why do you need a sports bag?
Wanda
I ...... um .... I just do that’s all! I keep asking Mom and she says no, I ask Dad and he says no, I
even prayed to God that He could make somebody give me one! Just like Mr. Johnson gave one to
Toby when he joined the team.
SB
Oh, so you play hockey do ya?
Wanda
No.
SB
Volleyball?
Wanda
No.

Tennis?

Nope

Soccer?
Wanda
Not on a team.

Let me guess, baseball?
Wanda
(shaking head no) Uh uh.

I seem to be striking out here. What sport do you play?
Wanda
Well .... none, I don’t really like sports.
SB
Why on earth do you NEED a sports equipment bag then?
Wanda
I just want it. Think of all the stuff I could put in there!
SB
O.K., let me get this straight - you don’t need to carry around a helmet, .... shin pads, ........
shoulder pads, ....... skates, ........ or any other sports equipment?
(Wanda replies to each item with a "nope” or “uh-uh” etc.)
If you’re not into sports, what would you put in me?
Wanda
(thinking) Umm ....... maybe a ......

By the way, have you even tried to pick me up? C’mon over here
and try.
(Wanda goes over and struggles, grunts and groans unable to budge the bag and gives up)
Let me see, you hate sports, you have no sports equipment and
you can’t even lift me up to carry me around.
