The Story Retold is an audience participation play for Christmas

What's an Audience Participation Play?


Creche Download free play script

Narrator
“In those days Caesar Augustus issued a decree
that a census should be taken
of the entire Roman world.
And everyone went to his own town to register.”

All Townspeople chant:

We have to go home to be counted.
Augustus wants his tax. (Repeat 2-3 times)

Actions: walking on the spot, carrying bundles of clothing etc.
During the chant Mary and Joseph separate from the Townspeople and move on
to Scene II.

SCENE II The Inn at Bethlehem

Narrator

"So Joseph went up
from the town of Nazareth in Galilee
to Judea, to Bethlehem the town of David,
because he belonged to the house and line of David.
He went there to register with Mary.
While they were there,
the time came for the baby to be born..."

People at the Inn stand and set up props and scenery.

But when they arrived at the inn...

The Inn people chant:

No room in the Inn.
Go away, go away! (Repeat 2-3 times.)

Actions: hands up to stop, wave off on "go away"
One person takes Mary and Joseph to the manger.
Mary kneels down, picks up baby hidden behind manger,
places the baby in the manger
