Get Up Get Out
Scene I
(Living room setting at side or in front of main stage.)
Two children loll around in easy chairs staring intently at a T.V. screen. Mother bustles through the room with children's coats, hats, mitts and scarves.
Mother
C'mon you two drag yourselves away from that screen! It's a beautiful winter night out there. The fresh air would do you good. Your eyes are as square as that T.V.!
Matt
(Whining)
Ah Mom, we're right in the middle of the movie, Santa has gone missing and the elves have to find him or else.......
Sue
(Stubbornly)
Besides, it's cold outside.... and..
Matt
icy,
Sue
(Dramatically)
freezing,
Matt
(More dramatically)
frigid,
Sue
blizzardy,
Matt
heaping snowdrifts ......
Sue
that swallow children alive.......
Matt
then spit them out as snowmen
Sue
and before you can melt.......
Matt
your, your, your toes fall off!
Sue
Noooooo, not the toes.......!!!!
Mother
(Giving up, drops clothing on floor)
You two are impossible! There's a winter wonderland waiting for you out there and you're missing all the fun.
(Exits)
Sue and Matt give each other a "high five" and settle down to watch more T.V.
Matt
(Sitting up and staring closely at the T.V.)
What's wrong ..... the picture's really weird.......
Television starts shaking wildly and out of the screen pops an elf
Sue & Matt
(Squeal and huddle together)
Who .... who........ wha, wha wha'd'ya want?
Elf
Hi, I'm Floyd. I've had enough of that movie, doing the same thing over and over and over again! I overheard your Mom telling you to go outside. I also heard your silly answers to her.
(Shaking his head back and forth)
Tsk, tsk, tsk. You're in a bigger rut than I am and you're not even caught in a movie!
C'mon get your coats, we're gonna sample some cold, icy, freezing, frigid fun!
(Children hastily put on hats & coats and follow Floyd up to stage as curtain opens on outdoor scene)
Scene II
Outdoor scene with many children dressed in winter clothes running, sliding, playing in the snow etc. – a child dressed as a snowman stands still in the middle of the scene
Matt
Hey there's Bobby and Hiren! Hi guys.
Sue
Look at everybody ..... look at the snowflakes ...
it really is a winter wonderland!
music intro ..... all sing ... Winter Wonderland
Characters wander through action on stage - skating, tobogganing etc.
Matt
(Patting tummy of snowman)
This is the best snowman I've ever seen; he's almost real.
(Suddenly snowman moves arm and knocks Matt down)
Ahhh!
Floyd
(Dancing around snowman)
Well, well, looks like you were right about it being a FROSTY night!
(music intro, all sing Frosty the Snowman as Frosty dances around)
Sue
(Waving as Frosty thumps off stage)
Bye Frosty, bye Frosty!
(gets twirled around by person running by in red long johns)
Woah, who was that?
Floyd
(Grabbing a hold of runner)
I know who, I know who! C'mon elves, I think we found him!
Several elves run out with Santa's clothing as music starts. All sing Must Be Santa as elves dress Santa. At end of song reindeer take Santa off stage with Floyd
Matt
(Plopping down on stage)
This has been great, but I'm ready for a rest.
Sue
(Settling down beside Matt)
Me too. Where's Floyd?
Matt
I guess he went with Santa. After all, remember in the movie, he had to find Santa by Christmas Eve or there would be no toys for girls or boys.
Sue
Hey look, here comes Sarah Glaser.
Hi Sarah, what do you have with you?
Sarah walks over with an object (dreidel, piñata, candles ...) and tells about her family's celebration. Several other children show and tell about symbols or customs of their cultural or religious winter celebrations. End with tableau from Christian celebration of Christ's birth ....all sing Away in a Manger , Silent Night During singing Mother wearing hat and coat joins Matt & Sarah to sing.
Matt
You were right Mom. It really is a beautiful night out here.
Sarah
A winter wonderland.
Matt & Sarah
(To audience)
Merry Christmas!
